Jim Solis was the State Representative for District 38 in the Rio Grande Valley. He was elected to the House of Representatives in November of 1992 and sworn into office on January 12, 1993. He was re-elected to a seventh term in November of 2004.
Representative Solis is a life long resident of Harlingen. He is an attorney in private practice with his office located in Harlingen, Texas. He received his B.B.A. degree in Marketing and a Minor in Management from Pan American University - Edinburg, Texas in 1985. He received his Juris Doctorate, Cum Laude, from Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston, Texas in 1989. He holds a certificate of mediation under the Texas Civil Practice & Remedies Code Chapter 154.
Representative Solis has served as a member of the House Committee on Judicial Affairs, House Committee on Local and Consent Calendars, House Committee on Appropriations, and Chairman of Economic Development. He has served on the Commerce and Communications Committee of the Assembly, on Federal Issues, National Conference of State Legislators on Education, Labor, & Job Training, Commerce and Communication. He currently serves as a member of the Texas House of Representatives Public Health Committee, Judiciary Committee and House Research Organization. He is also a member of the House Mexican American Legislative Caucus, Legislative Study Group, State Bar of Texas, National Labor Caucus of State Legislators, Mexican American Democrats, Cameron County Bar Association, Harlingen Dawn Breakers Lions Club, The Shaken Baby Alliance, National Registry of Who's Who in Government, Los Fresnos Boys and Girls Club Board Member, International Good Neighbor Council, Harlingen Boys & Girls Club Board Member, Harlingen Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Board Member, Harlingen Chamber of Commerce, San Benito Chamber of Commerce, and the Los Fresnos Chamber of Commerce.
The Texas Economic Development Council, the state’s largest professional economic development association, named Representative Solis 2001 Legislator of the Year for his hard work and positive contributions made to improve the economic climate of Texas. Representative Solis was the first recipient of the Distinguished Leadership Award by the Workforce Leadership of Texas for his leadership as Chairman of the House Economic Development Committee in support of local workforce boards and the state=s workforce system. Also, in 2001 he received the Health Care Champion Award by the Association of Community Health Centers for his authorship of the Community Health Centers Revolving Loan Fund and support of public health issues.
Representative Solis is now retired after 14 years of public service and is placing emphasis in his law practice and businesses.
Representative Solis is married to the former Diana Gonzalez of Brownsville. They have two children, Jim Solis III and Diego Andres Solis.
